Tracing History

This practice-based research project developed a new design process; ‘Tracing History’ which utilises a research foundation of strategies to nurture ‘consumer-product attachment’. The process developed, encourages the design of consumer products that are enjoyable to use, embody product memories and facilitate the formation of long-term memory associations between consumer and product. The formation of a strong consumer-product association informs sustainable design practice.

The process ‘Tracing History’ could be implemented into a designers practice in either the design of, or the ideation of new historical considered products. The research project investigated design for the domestic environments and its ‘social context’. The selected used products were sourced from this domain working in pursuit of renewed meaning. The products created embody a historical consideration and understanding of the world, while considering the future; designed for an enduring consumer-product relationship.
